Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370300 AB OBJECTIVE: This study determined Nigerian adolescents HIV/AIDS Sensitization in terms of knowledge of the disease, its health, social and economic implications as well as their prevailing sexual behaviour in the light of what they know. METHOD: The subjects of the study were 400 adolescents 15-19 years old drawn from Ibadan North Local Government Area. They were made up of 198 boys and 102 girls currently attending school; and 42 boys and 58 girls currently out of school. Structured interview schedules were used to collect the data which was subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Results show that a majority of the respondents were well aware of HIV/AIDS, its social, health and economic implications. However, there were strong indications of high risk sexual practices among the sample. The result is the same for both boys and girls as well as in school and out of school respondents. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It is concluded that although adolescents in Ibadan North appear sufficiently sensitized, high risk sexual practices abound. On the basis of this result a participatory intervention programme aimed at promoting sustained behaviour change is proposed and is being pursued.
